About this object
Photograph; a black and white photograph of Mr J Wright's house, Houipapa, c1900-1940.

The Wright family was one of the first to settle in Houipapa. The initial settlement, c1890, was on a government scheme called the Village Homestead Settlement in which settlers leased sections. They were required to clear and farm their sections, supplementing their income with labour on the roads, railway or in sawmills. The settlers had little capital and some say if it weren't for the native birds and the river and lake fish these settlers could not have stuck it out. The area was swampy and even in the 1920s only partially developed, remote and surrounded by bush (Tyrell, A.R. 2001 Catlins Pioneering).

The original photograph has been digitised. A digital image and copy print are available for research access.
